Description

Libohova Castle is located on a rocky hill, above the small town of Libohova. It is otherwise known as the castle of Shanisha, sister of Ali Pasha Tepelena. It was a gift for his sister's wedding, where Shanishaja lived with her husband.

The dominant position that controls the outskirts of the city, such as the Dropull plain, the mountains and the plains that extend to the South and West, defines the strategic role of this fortress, which are both the control of communication lines and the provision of easy mobility. Libohova Castle has an almost rectangular plan, with a tower at each corner and three entrances, two of which are positioned on the north side and the other on the east. The castle was a perimeter wall 70 m long and 50 m wide. Inside the fort are still preserved the ruins and part of the castle masonry as well as part of another residential structure, such as intertwined protective structures with a sophisticated living organization.

The castle was built by Ali Pasha Tepelena (1741 - 1822), most likely using the ruins of another structure. The castle preserves the construction features of this period. There are still photos of the former castle where Shanisaja lived. According to the tradition of the area, Ali Pasha ordered the construction of the castle for the wedding of his sister Shanisha. Her grave is also located in Libohova, in an area between cypress trees near the city mosque.

For visitors interested in history and archaeology, a trip to Libohova Castle provides a unique opportunity to delve into the region's past. The castle's commanding position offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts as well.

Moreover, efforts have been made to preserve and restore certain sections of the castle, allowing visitors to experience its former glory. Guided tours and informational plaques help shed light on the castle's historical context, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of its significance.

Aside from the castle itself, the town of Libohova offers additional attractions, such as traditional Albanian architecture, a charming atmosphere, and a welcoming local community. Exploring the narrow streets and interacting with residents provides an authentic cultural experience that complements the visit to the castle.

Overall, Libohova Castle stands as a testament to the region's rich history, architectural heritage, and strategic importance. Its majestic presence and historical significance make it a must-visit destination for those interested in Albania's past and the captivating allure of ancient fortresses.
