Description
The Monastery of Spila, dating back to 1634, is a captivating testament to history. Its naos, carved in the shape of a cross, showcases the vibrant fresco colors and rebellious style of mural painting by the renowned artist Mihali during the time of Bishop Kalist. Nestled within a karst rock, this small cave church was once inhabited by hermit monks who sought solace and redemption from their sinful nature.
Visiting the monastery and exploring its surroundings will offer you a mesmerizing experience lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Afterwards, we will embark on a walk towards the village of Saraqinisht, where a delightful picnic lunch awaits in the charming courtyard of a local home. Here, you will have the opportunity to savor a centuries-old traditional recipe traditionally enjoyed during religious holidays. This moment will immerse you in the rich traditions of Lunxhëria, the local culture, and the bountiful cuisine inspired by the region's exceptional natural resources.
Following our picnic, we will begin our return journey to the village of "Asim Zeneli." The descent will lead us through a diverse landscape, passing by the picturesque village of Tranoshishtë and the ancient path of the Epirot village. Along the way, you'll be enchanted by lush meadows and pastoral scenes that embody the essence of rural life. Upon reaching "Asim Zeneli," transportation will be provided to Gjirokastra, concluding our memorable excursion.
